Überblick : Beasts of No Nation ist in einem nicht näher benannten westafrikanischen Land angesiedelt. Agu lebt dort als ein ganz normaler Junge. Doch um ihn herum tobt ein grausamer Bürgerkrieg. Als Milizen Agus Vater umbringen, wird der Junge unfreiwillig in die blutigen Kämpfe hineingezogen. Als Kindersoldat zwingt man ihn dazu, sich einer Gruppe von Söldnern anzuschließen. Angeführt wird die Truppe von einem grausamen Kommandanten, den Agu mit fortschreitender Zeit zugleich fürchtet und bewundert. Während der Junge spätestens nach seiner blutigen Initiation seine Kindheit hinter sich lässt, lernt er fasziniert die Mechanismen des Krieges.
